This page contains answers to common questions handled by our support staff, along with some tips and tricks that we have found useful and presented here as questions.

Note: In these answers we will follow a few shorthand conventions for describing user-interface procedures. Key combinations will be presented like this: Ctrl+Alt+Delete, which means that you should press and hold down the Control key, the Alt key, and the Delete key at the same time. Menu selections will be presented like this: File->Open, which means that you should open the File menu, and then make the Open selection.

New NEC "Classroom"  Projector operating instructions

The remote enables you to control the computer and the projector, but we will only use it to control the projector.

YOU MUST PRESS THE BUTTON MARKED "PJ" BEFORE HITTING ANY OTHER BUTTON (clear button in the middle)!

When you hit the "PJ" button, it should light up red. After the light is red, you can use the projector remote.  When the red light is on, it is controlling the projector. The red light will go off automatically if you don't use the remote for ten seconds, then you will have to repress the "PJ" button before you can use it again.

TO TURN THE PROJECTOR "ON/OFF", YOU MUST HOLD THE "ON/OFF BUTTON" FOR AT LEAST THREE SECONDS! IF IT DOESN'T SHUT OFF, YOU MIGHT NEED TO STAND IN DIRECT LINE OF SIGHT TO THE PROJECTOR.

Button Combinations

"PJ" then "RGB" = Turns on computer projection

"PJ" then "Video" = Turns on VHS projection

"PJ" then "On" = Turns projector on

"PJ" then "Off" = Turns projector off

Sympodium and Document Camera Instructions

The power button is located on the back right side of the base.

Unfold both lamps before raising the camera.

There is a release at the base of the camera stand that must be pushed in order to raise the camera.

Read 164:    Once the camera is on and the lights are on, select S-Video on the projector remote to view on the screen.

Read 274:    Once projector is on, select video on the remote and if it shows the VCR screen instead of the Document camera, select input on the VCR remote and then the Document camera image will appear.

Use the zoom buttons to enlarge the image and the auto focus button to sharpen.

Use the upper lamp for objects and plain paper and the base lamp for transparencies.

Once finished with lecture, be sure to fold the camera down first pressing the release before moving the camera.  The camera has to be rotated in order for it to sit flat and be able to fit into the drawer.  After the camera is laid flat, lower the lights before sliding the drawer into the cabinet.

Sympodium:

Make sure the power to the monitor is on.

Use the pen as a mouse, the wireless mouse is also in the cabinet with the Projector remote and VCR.

The pen always assumes a left click when pressed to the screen.  To right click, push the button on the top left of the monitor and then press the pen where you want to right click on the screen.  The pen will automatically return to left click after the right click has been used.

The buttons on the top of the monitor in the middle are the 4 pens and the eraser.  These pens can be used to make annotations to your slides or to write notes in the Notebook.

Power Point:

Once you begin your presentation you will be prompted to decide between one click or two clicks of the screen to advance a slide.  If you choose the two clicks, you can reverse slides by clicking once and then immediately clicking to the left of the first click.  Or you can use the transparent tool bar on the lower left of the presentation to advance slides.  If you close this toolbar, the only way to get it back is to open a new presentation.  In the middle of the toolbar there is a menu button that will allow you to control Power point and other smart functions, End Show, Auto Save annotations, capture to Notebook, and other power point functions.  Auto save annotations saves the notes you make on your slides to the power point show, capture to notebook save the single slide to the smart notebook.

Notebook:

The notebook is a smart feature built into the whole smart package.  To open the notebook, click on “Notebook” on the menu on the bottom right of the screen.  In the notebook, you can hand write notes onto the screen and convert your handwriting to text or leave it in script.  Once you are done with the notebook, you can save the file as a PDF to share with your students on the web, or to keep backups for yourself.  To save as a PDF, go to the file menu and select the “Export” option and select PDF as file type and give the file a name and location to save to.  Once you have it saved, move it to your user folder on the server and then you can post to the web from your office or open it on your office computer.

The more you use the new equipment and all of its functions, the easier it will be.  I am sure that once you become comfortable with the equipment and the supporting software you will enjoy using it and see how it can benefit you and your students.
